I love drawing and painting black animals as I enjoy working tonally, creating depth and warmth within the portrait. Often its effective to have a brightly coloured background or detail to add contrast to the painting.
The source photo is very important to achieving the best possible portrait, especially for a black animal. Advice for choosing and/or taking a good photo for the portrait would be:
- natural light, no flash
- as clear and detailed as possible, especially in the eyes, the image still retains detail when zoomed in a couple of times
I can help advise you further or if you are in the Edinburgh area I would be happy to come and take the photo myself.
