Oskar Fischinger at the Piers Art Centre, Stromness

I went to see the film/animation exhibition Living Colour at the Piers Art Centre in Stromness, Orkney. There were some really beautiful animated abstract films dating back to the 1920’s,  I especially like the film by Oskar Fischinger who was an abstract animator, film maker and painter working around that time. He worked for the film maker Fritz Lang and on Disney’s Fantasia. This is an example of his abstract musical animations which he made for MGM in 1938. He manipulated hundreds of paper cut outs hung on invisible wires and animated them to the music of Franz Liszt’s 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody, its very beautiful!
