Today we visited the Orkney Museum in Kirkwall and saw their exhibit of Stanley Cursiter’s original painting equipment, which was very beautiful and decorative. I will post a photo of my own painting equipment when I get home, its a bit starker in relation to Cursiter’s, an easel, a trolly table on wheels, a jam jar and a plate covered in tin foil!. I like not needing much, it makes me able to be mobile. I have an easel in my studio and an easel at my mums so I can paint wherever I choose to be!
We got chatting to the museum assistant who let us watch a short film about Cursiter’s life which included extracts of Cursiter speaking about his life! He met his wife in London during the war, they married very quickly and the following week he was sent out to serve in France and didnt see his wife again for 2 years! He couldnt serve at the front due to illness but he was able to adapt his artisitic skills to making maps from ariel photographs and his technique inabled maps to be created a lot quicker, helping the war effort.
