Stanley Cursiter, Yesnaby, Orkney

On holiday in Orkney and today we visited the Yesnaby cliffs where Stanley Cursiter painted often. The cutting cliff-scape and lashing sea make a very imposing and frightening but beautiful place to be. I admire the artist Stanley Cursiter for setting up his easel on the precarious cliff edge, however he painted these cliffs and the sea here many times.

Stanley Cursiter was born in Kirkwall, Orkney in 1887 He studied at Edinburgh College of art and later became the Keeper of the National Galleries of Scotland and was also appointed as the King’s/Queen’s Painter and Limner for Scotland.
